Halpin, RSM, Sister Marie Lorraine, 91, a Sister of Mercy for 72 years, died on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre. She was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Reilly) Halpin and sister of the late John and James Halpin. She is survived by two nephews, Timothy and Kevin Halpin, cousins, and her close friend, Judith Davenport.
Sister spent most of her years in the teaching ministry, the first five in the Fall River Diocese. The Diocese of Providence then benefited from her teaching skills for approximately 30 years. St. Leo the Great Parish community in Pawtucket, RI was her supportive family for 22 years. She served there as teacher and later as principal.
Sister Lorraine loved music and spent a few years as director of the Glee Club and orchestra at St. Mary’s Academy-Bay View in Riverside, RI and the former Mount St. Mary’s Academy, Fall River. She especially enjoyed the music of her Irish ancestry during a memorable trip to Ireland.
She quietly helped others in hidden ways. Continuing her mother’s custom, she never failed, when grocery shopping, to buy “something for the poor”. In her retirement years she became a willing volunteer who clocked many miles driving sisters to appointments and errands.
May this lover of music (especially Irish) be welcomed by heavenly choirs to her heavenly home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 5, 2021 at St. John Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Rd., Cumberland beginning with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
