John M. Calheta

John M. Calheta, 72, of Earl Street, West Warwick, passed away Wednesday morning, February 10, 2021 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was the beloved husband of Ermelinda S. (Arraial) Calheta, they had been married for forty-six years.  Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, he was a son of the late Joao J. and Maria R. (Pimental) Calheta.  He came to West Warwick in 1973.

Mr. Calheta was employed as forklift operator in Leviton Manufacturing for thirty-six years before retiring in 2009.  He adored his grandchildren, enjoyed videography and helped film events for the Portuguese Channel. He was an amateur photographer who always had a camera in  hand. He was an avid Sporting Club Portugal fan and could always be found searching yard sales and flea markets for deals. He also loved spending time fishing on his boat with family. 

Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Ana C. Martins, and her husband, Carlos A. Martins; a son, Steven J. Calheta, and his wife, Angela M. Calheta; a sister, Maria J. Cabral and four grandchildren, Serena and Lucas Martins and Hallie and Landon Calheta.  He was the grandfather of the late Donovan Martins and brother of the late Maria L. Sousa and Adriano J. Calheta.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday, February 15, 2021 from 9:00-10:00 am in St. Anthony Church, Sunset Avenue, West Warwick followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am (all State Covid-19 guidelines will be observed).  Due to the current pandemic restrictions, interment will be private for the family.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to St. Anthony Church, 10 Sunset Avenue, West Warwick, RI 02893 in his memory would be appreciated.
